1. INTRODUCTION
Lots of news about it, but no one is explaining in short/clear terms why India might rename to Bharat.
Let me break it down for you. 👇
2. WHY INDIA MIGHT RENAME TO BHARAT?
The Republic of India might* change the name of the country to Bharat for the following reasons:
- To break away from the last traces of its colonial history (the name of “India” was given by westerns colonizers after the Indus river). Bharat is the transliteration of the name of the country in hindi (भारत गणराज्य, Bhārat Gaṇarājya).
- In July, the opposition of the current government created a new alliance named like the country: INDIA (Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance); so the current efforts to rename the name of the country to Bharat can also have political reasons by the party in charge.
So, in short, the reasons why India is exploring a country name is due to a mix of historical, cultural and political reasons.
